Review of Emergency Department A&E - Doncaster Royal Infirmary
4th May 2024

Good - For over 150 Patients attending, the A&E service performed as well as it could with the few staff available. Excellent - The Registrar was so professional working through such a stressful busy shift. He was calm with a happy personality and made you feel relaxed and in safe hands. It was so good to hear he enjoyed working for our NHS and especially as relocated from Far East Asia. So hope he gets the praise and recognition he so deserves.

The Triage Nurse to be reinstated into a separate room. They can then properly see injuries and not waste a Patient's time sending them to Minor Injuries, as I was on Thurs 25th, when needed to see a Doctor. 1.5hrs wasted when not necessary. The seating in A&E is awful being turned now facing the wall. Felt very unsafe having Patients queue up behind. Need to face the entrance for safety. Imagine if someone had run in with a sword, could be horrific, as not be able to see them and move away fast enough. On arrival, need an area to queue correctly, as no one sure where to go. As so busy Patients were waiting/sitting in the Doorway and causing more disorientation of where to go on arrival. On attending again on Mon, 29th there was 3 Prisoners in with 6 Guards all taking up seats, which was so unfair, especially with a leg injury and unable to stand for long. I was lucky and did get a seat but a young girl with an ankle fracture did not. Another attendee did get her a wheelchair but later a Nurse came out from the A&E Central doors and took it away from her, without even asking if she could stand. She sat back down on the floor. A Nurse did come out and shouted out all Relatives/Friends and Guards to leave and sit in their Cars or stand up, so Patients could sit down. When so busy should be informed when Booking in. The amount that left without notifying was also noted and Folks saying after 5hrs gone home. Should also be raised when booking in, to notify if leaving without being seen, so can be removed from the Waiting list. Pregnant Female awaiting a Bed at 5.45am had been there since 12pm Sunday and not offered anything to eat. That I also found untoward as normally offered a sandwich when within the Central area of A&E and been waiting hours. Most upsetting was the lack of urgent priority care for a 16yr old Male who presented with Head injuries having been beaten around his Head by 3 Males whilst sat on a Park bench. He attended with his Mother and was upsetting for many of us, to see him in such a battered state, nose bleed, eyes swelling and cut on cheek. We all know the seriousness of Head injuries and that they can kill. He ended up laying on the A&E floor but was kindly given a thin blanket and as for keeping him awake, no chance. He was still there 10 hours later when I left and that was the worst episode I have ever witnessed in an A&E Department. I work for another NHS Trust and could not apologise enough for our lack of NHS care, as it was so traumatic for his Mother unable to do anything for her Son. I do hope he was okay and that shocking lack of NHS care memory will now never leave me.

uncaring nursing staff who just got angry when I had a mental health crisis (BPD and PTSD), very unkind, refusing to listen to my request for mental health support

Suggested improvements
have a safe space for neurodivergent / autistic people with less sensory overload than the main waiting room

There was quite a bit of waiting around but every person that I came into contact with was kind, thoughtful and professional.

Suggested improvements
Under the circumstances of being extremely busy and with limited staff, they did very well. Ideally I would have liked to be kept informed of what was happening as it took 4 hours for the blood test to be looked at.

We came for an appointment in AMU & Bryonie dealt with us. She was fantastic, very patient, obliging & explained everything in detail, in a way we understood. She said she was “training “ but you would never have known. We definitely were a challenging patient for her! Thanks Bryonie x

Waiting time was not to bad ,but considering I visited a&e was that I had a considerable amount of pain in my coccyx area into my right hip ,no examination or offer of x-rays ,just told to take co codamol & cold compression , not happy after saying saying that our car had been hit from behind whilst we were stationary at 40 mph +

Suggested improvements
They could have been a bit more sympathetic & more caring as I was in a lot of pain & still am
